Kentucky Bourbon Trail: Top Distilleries to Visit

Kentucky Bourbon Trail: Top Distilleries to Visit

By: Jerry Fisher/Watson Fisher Travel

Are you a bourbon lover looking for your next adventure? Look no further than Kentucky's famous Bourbon Trail! With distilleries like Buffalo Trace, Heaven Hill, Bardstown Bourbon Company, and Old Forester, you'll have the chance to taste some of the best bourbon in the country while experiencing the region's rich history. I took a tour in the heart of Bourbon Country and discovered why Kentucky's Bourbon Trail is a must-visit destination for any whiskey enthusiast. I am sure you will also have a delightful and spirited adventure!

I toured four of my favorite producers of Bourbon within a 3 day period but there are much more distilleries for you to tour and enjoy. With each distillery there is story behind the produce filled with history. Below is just a few of my favorites my friends and I enjoyed.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Tours

When visiting Buffalo Trace Distillery, we immersed ourselves in the rich fabric of bourbon making. The tour offers a comprehensive view of the distillery's operations, starting with the backstory of its origins and evolution. Each step of the bourbon-making process, from grain selection to bottling, is detailed thoroughly, allowing visitors like us to appreciate the craftsmanship involved.  The distillery showcased its rich historical significance and its important role in the community and the spirits industry. If you are looking for a hard to find allocated bottle arrive early. There is a line for tours and to purchase from the store. Some of the allocated bottles have a limited on how many bottles you can purchase at a time but it is worth it.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Tasting Experience

Tasting of some of Buffalo Trace produce

The highlight of the Buffalo Trace Distillery tour is undoubtedly the tasting experience. Here, we had the opportunity to sample a selection of fine bourbons, each with its unique flavor profile. These tasting sessions are educational, led by knowledgeable guides who broke down the flavor profiles of each bourbon. It's a sensory journey that helped us understand what makes Buffalo Trace's products so popular. Additionally, the distillery offers a range of special events and limited-edition bourbon releases, providing us with an exclusive opportunity to taste some bottles we never tried before.

Incorporating these experiences into our visit, I realize why Buffalo Trace Distillery is not just a place, but a journey through the history and culture of bourbon. It's a must-visit for anyone who cherishes fine spirits and the stories behind them.

Bottle of Elijah Craig

Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience Tours

My tour of the distillery was amazing. From the interactive exhibit gallery to the iconic tasting rooms, each with a story to tell. We're guided through the fermentation, distillation, and aging processes, seeing firsthand how bourbon is brought to life. The highlight? The 1935 Distillery Theater, where an immersive 11-minute show brings the history of how their bourbons came to life. This tour and experience deepened my appreciation for Heaven Hill-produced bourbons for sure.

Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience Tasting

The tasting session is where the magic happens. In one of the three iconic tasting rooms, we were introduced to a variety of Heaven Hill's products. Each bourbon has its own story, from the smoky depths of Elijah Craig to the smooth sweetness of Larceny. What makes this experience unique is the opportunity to taste, bottle, and personalize your own bottle of bourbon. Not just a tasting, but a hands-on journey through the art of whiskey making. This is another one where you need to arrive earlier to enjoy.

Visiting the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience is more than just a tour; it's an immersive journey into the heart of American whiskey culture. Each step, from the rich history to the interactive tastings, crafts a story of heritage and passion that is as flavorful as the bourbon itself. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or new to the world of whiskey, this experience is a must on your Kentucky Bourbon Trail adventure.

Old Forester Distilling Co. Tours

Visiting Old Forester, was more than just a tour; it was very educational and filled with bourbon history. The distillery offers a comprehensive look at its operations, from its crafting process to ghosts of heritage that permeated throughout the distillery. Visitors like us were treated to an engaging walkthrough of the distillery's active cooperage, where barrels are charred on-site, a rare practice that provides a look into traditional methods. The tour not only highlights the historical significance of Old Forester but also its ongoing innovations that continue to shape the bourbon industry.

Old Forester Distilling Co. Tasting Experience

The tasting experience at Old Forester is nothing short of captivating. Here, we saw a variety of bourbon expressions, each crafted to showcase the unique aspects of their signature mash bills. Each session is not merely about tasting but understanding the layers of flavors that define each bourbon. From the classic richness of their flagship bourbon to the exclusive, limited-edition releases like the President's Choice, the diversity of taste profiles showed just how serious they are about bourbon making. The highlight for us was being able to engage directly with the process, personalizing our own bottle, which adds a personal touch to the immersive experience.

Bardstown Bourbon Company Visitor Center

Bardstown Bourbon Company Tours

We visited Bardstown Bourbon Company, which was my personal favorite. We did not do the tour but tours were available. From what we were told the tours were pretty comprehensive and provided an in-depth look at the distillery's operations, traditions, and innovation. The area was like a campus with an upscale environment.

Bardstown Bourbon Company Tasting Experience

The tasting sessions at Bardstown Bourbon Company were a highlight of our visit. We sampled a range of bourbons, including some very expensive limited-edition bottles and drinks. They have what was like a cafeteria-style restaurant bar indoors and outdoors. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and able to suggest the best pours for our flavor profiles.

Their vintage library was like a laboratory. Hands-on cocktail crafting sessions, or just enjoying the outdoor sunset setting, made the experience memorable. Bardstown is not just about bourbon; it's about building a deeper appreciation for the art and science of whiskey making. Many of those hanging out were not visitors but regulars.

Reflecting on our visit to Kentucky, we are reminded of the importance of preserving these traditions of bourbon-making while embracing the future of bourbon. With each distillery visit, we not only tasted something exceptional but deepened our appreciation for the people and stories behind every bottle. It encouraged us to explore further and share these experiences with others in the spirit of discovery. Not to be left out, were some of the other places we enjoyed during our stay in Lexington, Kentucky. Being from New York, and a Mets fan, we had to visit the Louisville Slugger Museum which was a treat. One of our nights we had dinner at Repeal Oak Fired Steakhouse and I tell you this place rivaled some of the best New York Steakhouses. The bar scene, drink menu, and steaks were the best with nothing to complain about. We had the best waiter, Abraham. The people at the River House Restaurant and Raw Bar were very accommodating and the food was delicious as well. Restaurant and Bar Number 15 was also a blast on Main Street.

To experience the entire Kentucky Bourbon Trail, you need a good week and careful planning. We will definitely return to experience some of the other distilleries we missed like Angels Envy, Rabbit Hole, New Riff, and Woodford Reserve just to name a few. There are many others to enjoy especially if you are a lover of Bourbon and history. It is worth the trip.

Carry-On Like a Pro: Essential Tips for Budget Travelers

Flights can be expensive. Most of the cheap flights do not include checked baggage. How can you cut your cost of travel by not checking your luggage and packing a carry-on as lightly as possible? We will provide some brief tips on packing to keep your cost of travel down. As a suggestion please check with your airline, cruise provider, TSA, or Travel Agent for the most up-to-date regulations.

Tips for Cheap Flights and Travel Getaways

What is Not Allowed in a Carry-On?

When preparing for your trip, it's crucial to be aware of items that are not allowed in a carry-on. Here are some common restrictions to keep in mind:

  • Liquids over 3.4 ounces: To comply with TSA regulations, all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

  • Sharp objects: Items such as knives, scissors, and razor blades are typically prohibited in carry-on luggage.

  • Hazardous materials: Certain items like flammable liquids, explosives, and chemicals are strictly prohibited.

How Can I Get the Most Clothing to Fit in a Carry-On?

Maximizing clothing space in a carry-on is essential, especially for budget travelers aiming for low-cost flights. Here are some tips to make the most of your carry-on space:

  • Roll your clothes: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can help save space and reduce wrinkles.

  • Utilize packing cubes: Packing cubes not only keep your clothing organized but also compress them, allowing you to fit more items in your carry-on.

  • Wear bulky items: If you plan to bring bulkier clothing items, such as jackets or boots, consider wearing them during your travel to save space in your luggage.

How to Pack Lightly for a Cruise

Packing lightly for a cruise requires thoughtful planning in advance to ensure you have everything you need without overpacking. Consider the following tips:

  • Research dress codes: Different cruise lines may have specific dress codes for various onboard activities. Pack versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched for different occasions.

  • Limit shoe choices: Shoes can take up a significant amount of space. Choose a few pairs that can be worn with multiple outfits.

  • Use travel-sized toiletries: Toiletries can add unnecessary bulk to your luggage. Use travel-sized versions and consider purchasing any additional items at your destination.

Knowing how to pack a carry-on well is key for people who want cheap flights and easy trips. You need to know what airlines allow, make the most of space for your clothing, and pack smart for your specific trip, taking into account your length of stay. These tips will help you pack better and enjoy your trip. When you pack this way, you can start your next trip feeling good knowing you've packed well for your journey.
